About Shea Heights in St. John’s, NL
Perched on the hills overlooking St. John’s Harbour, Shea Heights is one of the most historically distinctive neighborhoods in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Known locally as “The Hill” or “The Brow,” the community offers sweeping views of the harbour and downtown, along with a tight-knit identity shaped by decades of struggle, renewal, and resilience.
From Blackhead Road to Shea Heights
The neighborhood’s roots trace back to the 1930s, when it was settled largely by St. John’s residents who couldn’t find or afford housing within city limits. Originally known as Blackhead Road, the area developed a reputation for poverty and substandard housing; by the early 1960s, roughly 2,000 people were living in about 336 small dwellings often described as shacks.
That changed with a $4.1 million federal-provincial urban renewal project launched in 1963 under Premier Joey Smallwood, which rebuilt roads and infrastructure and added a community reservoir. The community was folded into the St. John’s metropolitan area that same year, though it wasn’t formally annexed into the city itself until 1984. Residents continued pushing for improvements long after the initial renewal, using a National Film Board of Canada grant in 1973 to make the case to the provincial government for a proper sewerage system. The name Shea Heights, chosen to honor a local priest, came into use around 1977.
A Community Apart, Even Today
Despite full integration into St. John’s, Shea Heights has held onto a distinct identity. In 2001, the remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle flooded local streets and left the community temporarily cut off from the rest of the city, a reminder of its somewhat isolated geography on the harbour’s south side. Even its postal code has set it apart: as recently as 2013, mail addressed to Shea Heights had to specify the neighborhood name rather than “St. John’s” to arrive correctly.
